Actually, the Sky isn’t Falling

Oh, Chicken Little.  When you run around screaming, “The sky is falling!” we nod and chuckle to ourselves at how silly you look.  Because we all secretly know the sky isn’t falling.  That “piece of sky” was just an acorn.  We feel safe and secure in the knowledge that we ourselves would never overact like you, Chicken Little.

Recharging your Batteries

Growing up, I listened to a cassette headphone player so much, that my parents bought rechargable AA batteries to save on costs.  In order to effectively recharge the batteries, you had to play them down until they had nothing left in them.  Then you’d leave them in the charger box overnight and voila!  Freshly charged batteries.

You may have noticed that I haven’t blogged much in the past two weeks.  That’s because I was recharging my batteries by taking some time off.

Finding the Right Pace

We’ve all been on projects where setting the right work pace is an issue.  The most common problem is finding a pace that will allow you to get your work done on time.  Usually, your work is tied into that of others, so you don’t always get to set your own pace.  Getting the right rhythm can be key to a happy off-work life, where you’re not always worrying if you got everything done that you needed to.

Giving Feedback: Know Thy Audience

The saying goes that we should “trust our instincts.”  In many life changing moments, I believe this to be good advice.  When someone pops you the question, you know in that very instant whether to say “yes” or “no.”  When offered two jobs – one with a high salary but boring work and one with a low salary but exciting work – your gut probably won’t lead you wrong.  When it comes to the “big picture questions,” 9 times out of 10 your gut can’t lead you astray.

That doesn’t mean, though, that our first response is great in every situation.  Case in point: team feedback.

The Art of Waiting

I am generally an impatient person.  It’s not that I don’t like hard work.  I’m willing to put forth the effort to get what I want.  But when I set my eyes on something, I want it as soon as I can.  And when I have a problem, I want it solved as quickly as possible.
