The Opportunity of No Opportunity

“We’re letting you go.”

There is perhaps not a more depressing and frightening phrase.  Losing a job also means the loss of stability – financial and emotional.  Where will the money come from?  What will come of my career?  Doubts on your ability to succeed emerge.  Maybe you’re not good enough at what you do.  Maybe you were never good enough.  Self doubts eat away at you, zapping your ability to move on.

What will the future hold?

5 Ways to Break Bad Habits

Today’s post is a guest blog written by Farouk Radwan, founder of 2KnowMySelf.   Farouk’s been a long time blog reader and has great insights on personal improvement.  Enjoy!

Most of the actions that we do on daily basis are nothing more habits that we got used to. Washing your face as soon as you wake up is considered a habit, checking your facebook while working is another habit, and getting angry when someone annoys you is a third habit.

The Real Measure of Start-Up Success

I started teaching an entrepreneurship class at the University of Oregon a few weeks ago, and I have to say, it’s been a real treat for me.  I’ve always wanted to teach at the collegiate level, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of students.  I have a class full of fantastic start-up ideas ranging from athletic consulting to mobile apps, and the students are eager to learn.  My “lectures” usually end up more as discussions, and there’s really never a dull moment.

Trying Something New

Related to last week’s post on taking time to learn, it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and do new things once in a while.  My “new thing” for the next few months will be teaching an entrepreneurship class at the University of Oregon.  The ups and downs so far:

Ups

  • Meeting lots of excited, passionate people who are eager to learn and have the drive to turn their energy into real ventures
  • Discussing all sorts of interesting entrepreneurial topics (the teacher can also be the student here)
  • Brushing up on my public speaking skills (it’s been a while since I had my daughter last July)
  • Getting out of the house more often rather than working from a computer (also related to having a daughter)
Downs
  • General nervousness about doing something I’ve never done before
Hmm…looking at it, it’s not a bad trade-off at all.
